LEADERS Holgate beat secondplaced Holgate WMC in a tense division one encounter in the York Amateur Bowling Association League.

Each of the four rinks could have been won by either team, but Holgate triumphed 6-2 to move clear at the top.

Dringhouses moved into third place with a 6-2 home win over bottom-placed RI Amateurs.

In division two, West Park remain second behind RI Corinthians despite a 6-2 defeat away to Clifton, who moved into third.

Copmanthorpe top division three with a 100 per cent record following a 6-2 win at Minster.

Second-placed Poppleton had a mixed week, suffering a 7-1 loss at Osbaldwick before recovering to beat Minster 6-2 at home.

Poppleton Road WMC moved into third after an emphatic 8-0 home win over University.

Retreat’s unbeaten start ended with a 6-2 home loss to Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, holders Railway Institute made a winning start to their defence of the York C&IU Bowls Evening League Knockout Cup.

Institute were convincing 63-40 winners over Poppleton Road in the preliminary round and they will now face Burton Lane in round one on Tuesday, June 3.

Acomb edged out Holgate 51-49 in the other preliminary tie to earn a first round game against Huntington.

In the other round one games, Clarence will take on St Clement’s and Tramways meet South Bank.

Clarence and Burton Lane are both still unbeaten in the Evening League to head the table.

Railway Institute are third, ten points shy of Burton Lane.

Acomb ‘A’ are the only unbeaten side after two games of the Afternoon League campaign.

Yorkshire lost 84-60 to Durham in the Muras Cup played in heavy rain at Manchester Heaton Hall.

The game was stopped after 72 ends had been completed when conditions became dangerous, with Durham taking 20 points to Yorkshire’s two points.

The game against Northumberland that should have followed the Durham match was cancelled and will be played at a later date.

However, the White Rose flourished when the county’s under- 25s double rinks team defeated Nottingham U25s in a close game at Dunnington Bowling Club.

After five ends, Notts led by five shots, but the margin was reduced to one shot after ten ends.

With both teams trading shots, Yorkshire still trailed by one after 15 ends before pulling ahead by four at 18 ends.

Yorkshire held their nerve to go on to win by two after 21 ends and progress to the regional finals at Kirkbymoorside on June 15.

Vets in form

WIGGINTON’S York Veterans’ League teams excelled.

Colin Ellis’ ‘A’ team are second in division one after winning 19-12 at Bootham, while the ‘E’ team of David Moorhouse were 17-16 winners at RI Amateurs to stay top of division five.

Dave Imeson’s ‘B’ side kept up their solid form with a 17-12 home win over West Park ‘A’.

Wigginton ‘A’ notched their first win in the Ryedale Veterans’ League as they beat Slingsby 72-69, with winning rinks from skips Ellis (19-16) and Tony Baker (21-9).

Wigginton ‘B’ lost the aggregate by three shots at Welham, picking up three points from the winning rink of skip Jane Stockton (19-9) and a drawn rink from Moorhouse (12-12).
