York City signing Femi Ilesanmi in action for Dagenham

YORK City’s new signing Femi Ilesanmi was the best left-back in Sky Bet League Two last season according to Bootham Crescent winger Josh Carson.

The Minstermen’s Northern Ireland international played against Ilesanmi during January’s 3-1 victory against the Southwark-born defender’s old club Dagenham & Redbridge.

Carson was replaced by Sander Puri 77 minutes into the game and City chairman Jason McGill has revealed that the ex-Ipswich midfielder regarded Ilesanmi as his toughest adversary in the division last term.

On hearing the identity of his club’s first summer signing, meanwhile, another City flank man Michael Coulson tweeted: “Great signing that. I know me and Josh Carson will be delighted we don’t have to play against him next season! #beast.”

Ilesanmi is believed to have been on the Minstermen’s radar for 12 months and, having witnessed the former QPR trainee sign a two-year contract, McGill said: “When Josh played against Femi, he said he was the best left-back he had come up against.

“He had a tough game against him and he is a player we have admired at York City for a while. Whenever we have seen him, he has done well against us.

“He is very combative and a good, solid defender, who fits into the Nigel Worthington mould. From a physical point of view, he will be very hard to beat in a one-on-one situation.

“I feel very positive about his signing and and I looking forward to seeing him in a York City shirt for the next two seasons.”

Ilesanmi, 23, was released by Dagenham last week, with manager Wayne Burnett putting his faith in highly-rated teenager Jack Connors as the Essex club’s first-choice.

Serving his apprenticeship with AFC Wimbledon and QPR, Ilesanmi joined Ashford Town before signing for the Daggers in 2010.

He initially spent three months on loan with Histon in the Conference but went on to make 133 appearances, including 25 League One outings, for the Victoria Road outfit and scored one goal.

• PLACES are still available to play in next month’s official York City Golf Day.

The competition will be staged on Monday, June 23 at Stockton-on-the-Forest and costs £160 for a team of four people.

Past and present City players can also be assigned to teams and the price includes an evening prize presentation dinner, 18 holes of golf and a bacon roll with hot beverage on arrival.

There are also still opportunities to sponsor a hole at £150 plus VAT.

Anybody interested in playing or sponsorship, should contact commercial executive Dave Hendry at commercial@yorkcityfootballclub.co.uk or on 01904 559501.

• PORTSMOUTH have signed released Charlton midfielder Danny Hollands.

A double swoop by Newport boss Justin Edinburgh, meanwhile, has seen defender Darren Jones and midfielder Yan Klukowski sign for the Exiles from AFC Wimbledon and Forest Green respectively.

Newly-relegated Sky Bet League Two outfit Shrewsbury have also made Cheltenham winger Ashley Vincent their first summer acquisition.

Strongly linked with Leeds last January according to the internet. Also as previous poster said, Michael Coulson is very happy about it

A Dagenham fan has said on his day he's unplayable, but he's inconsistent. Looking at how Davies developed under Worthington last year I'm betting that we're gonna see a very good player by the second half of the season, if not before

Well with a small squad I'm not looking at cheap options just players good enough. But Worthington knows what he's doing with defenders.

In fairness you could probably say that about banjo before NW got his hands on him. Seems like a solid signing and a signal that Davies wont be returning, i had hoped we'd get him back. Welcome to the club.

He was released. The Daggers manager is trying to get his side to play more of a passing game and Feminhas fallen out of favour as be has been unable to adapt. No reason why Femi shouldn't suit our more direct approach. Welcome to York City, Femi.

With him been released he will come cheaper.
Worthing can spot a bargin as we have seen in the past with the freebie of Boom Boom ,Fletcher and Carson. (did we pay a fee for PENN?)
Of course this kind of signing frees up the budget for a marquee signing..
If Nw can get a player of mccombes quality on a free transfer then he will be able to bring the key player(s) we need (Goal keeper/winger/strike
r) with a bigger carrot.
welcome Femi

Reading the Press today re i2i ,This is a huge positive for the youngster of York and around, its been needed for a long time , it means the local talent shouldn't loose out, it seems the best at the moment is to get into the schools squad is a selection over a 2 night trial which could include 150 lads for one age group, its imposable to pick 16 out of those, so it could end up being pushy parents getting their lads selected, So i'm Told.

It would be good to have cover for the full back positions & I cannot see utility man Parslow being rushed back & given Allen has been released it is a potential weakness I am guessing a quick defensive mid will be required to provide cover for the back 4.

I think this will turn out to be a good signing for us. Decent experience at L2 and L1 level, good age and from what I recall of seeing him for D&R against us this season at BC he was always aggressive in pressurizing his opponent and giving them little time on the ball which in my book is exactly what is required from a fullback in L2.

Don't recall him being much of a threat going forward but hopefully this is something he has in his locker as we didn't have a great deal of attacking threat last season from Davies despite his excellent defensive capabilities. He may well have been acting under instructions of course so not necessarily a criticism.

I like to see full-backs with pace who have the ability to provide the sort of over-lapping attacking threat that typically we didn't see too often last season apart from the occasional surge forward from Banjo. It just gives you another attacking option which we lacked last season from our left side in particular. I appreciate it can leave you more susceptible on the counter but it's all about getting the balance right.

I hope what I have just heard two Forwards are on their way here, both under 25 and goal scorers, Something needs to be addressed Bowman is not the answer , had we had a couple of poachers on the books I would have said keep Andrew, we need someone like him to use his weight but alas he came as a goal scorer and it back fired.

I hope you're right. He was voted 15th best player (out of 18) in a local newspaper poll.
I hasten to add that I generally find that I'm in agreement with dadster and the mail above falls into that category.

Last season I was criticised in some quarters for questioning the pedigree of our Estonian signing.
I rather suspect and certainly hope that this addition to the squad will be more successful.
Those that don't get to many games take their assessment from Youtube -I'll reserve judgement until we've seen him in the flesh over a couple of months of competitive games. Even then it might be too early to assess as he might be a Ben Davies type who improves over a long and continuous period.
Shouldn't be the case as he has much more first team experience but it is quite a geographic move and settling in can take time with some players.
With Worthington's hard work on defensive systems it is to be expected that a defender will settle quicker than a more expansive player.
I'm hoping our forwards have better second season syndrome but the creation in midfield will be key alongside our captain courageous.
