WHITWELL-ON-THE-HILL'S Terry Temple pushed 2013 BDO world champion Scott Waites all the way before bowing out in the quarter-finals of the Blue Bell Hotel Darts Championship.

Temple lost 3-2 to the eventual winner of the York Darts Promotions event despite having two darts at double tops to knock Waites out.

In an excellent game, Waites took the first set with legs of 19 and 15 darts but Temple checked out in 12 throws on his way to levelling the scores.

Temple added a 180 for 18 in the third set but double trouble saw Waites (20-21) move ahead again.

Bouncing back, Temple claimed 18 and 17-dart legs to take the match into a deciding set.

Waites' 17, followed by a 180 for 21 from Temple, then took the contest all the way to a final leg.

Two maximums looked to have put Temple in the driving seat but his pair of double-20 misses let in a relieved Waites, who claimed victory in 14 darts.

Temple's match average of 82.95 did, however, prove better than the Lakeside title winner's 81.23.

York's Rich Corner also made the last eight of the competition before bowing out 3-0 to former World Championship quarter-finalist Martin Atkins.

Corner won the first leg of their contest with a 16-dart effort , only for the England international to respond with 18 and 17 to take the first set.

After going 2-0 down, Corner rallied with a 20-dart opener in the next set but a swift 17 and 21 wrapped up the win for the ex-British Open winner, despite his opponent being sat on 24 after hitting a 180.

Bridlington's Steve Rice provided the shock of the night, knocking out two-time World Championship semi-finalist Darryl Fitton with an average of 90.33 in a 3-1 triumph.

The YDP tournament pitted the four qualifiers, from a field of 16, against four BDO players.

Rice went on to lose 4-0 to Waites in the semi-final with the pair averaging an impressive 93.85 and 99.38 respectively.

In the final, Waites beat current BDO world number one James Wilson 5-3 despite the latter claiming a 170 finish.

During the earlier matches, two 16-dart legs and a 15 could not save York's John Quantock (av 88.2) from losing 2-1 to Graham Usher, of Scarborough.

Pickering's Bill Hague also went down 2-0 to Rice after averaging 80.2 but winning one leg in 21 darts.

Temple (av 88.41) earlier whitewashed Bridlington's Andy Wheeler winning in legs of 20-17, then 14 plus 180 for 17 and also averaged 88.9 as he overcame Usher 2-1, with a 180, a 104 finish and legs of 13, 15 (twice), 16 and 20 darts.

An average of 69.91 saw Corner knock out Hornsea's Harvey Rodgers 2-0 before he prevailed 2-1 against Humberside's Jamie Ellam courtesy of a 78.76 average, as well as 17 (twice) and 21-dart legs.
