Matty Blair's muted celebration a mark of ‘respect’ for York City

York Press: Matty Blair is mobbed by his Fleetwood team-mates after netting the winner in the Sky Bet League Two play-off semi-final first leg against York City Matty Blair is mobbed by his Fleetwood team-mates after netting the winner in the Sky Bet League Two play-off semi-final first leg against York City

MATTY BLAIR admitted he wanted to "go mad" after scoring Fleetwood Town's winning goal in the League Two play-off semi-final first leg but said "respect" for York City was behind his subdued celebration.

The former Minstermen ace popped up at the far post to bundle the ball home past Nick Pope and give the Cod Army a priceless advantage at the half-way stage of the two-legged contest.

The man for the big occasion, having scored crucial goals for York in their run to a Wembley double and Football League promotion two years ago, Blair was noticeably quiet after his 50th minute strike - merely standing in front of the away supporters while he was mobbed by his teammates.

Explaining his reasoning, the 24-year-old said: "It was a muted one. I've got huge respect and feelings for this football club but I am a Fleetwood Town player and I am desperate to get them all the way. I kept it as respectful as I could but I did want to go mad, which is understandable.

"It is business. I want to score as many as I can, that's my job. I've got two in two games now and I should have had a third, so I am a bit disappointed with that. Let's make it three in three and four in four, why not?"

Blair said that City right back Lanre Oyebanjo was unlucky not to have prevented his goalbound effort from crossing the line, admitting there was a slice of fortune in the shot. He added that he would be aiming to get on the scoresheet again in the return leg on Friday.

"I was at the back post and I thought Lanre made a brilliant first block," Blair said. "He was very unlucky that it just bounced straight back to me and I just tapped it round him. I am not going to grump over that too much. I will take it and I will score again on Friday, hopefully.

"It happened very quickly. The ball came over and I hit it well enough and Banj has just threw himself in front of it and it just popped up. It happened too quickly for me even to think but it is fortunate for us."

Can't be doing with this muted celebration nonsense. Whatever team your playing for or supporting, youre delighted when they score, and there's nothing wrong in showing it.

I didn't think more of Blair for not celebrating, and I wouldn't have thought less of him if he'd cartwheeled all the way back to the centre circle.

Football's a passionate game - don't suppress the passion, revel in it.

Ver well, I'll respect Matty, his teammates and both of Fleetwood's supporters by not shouting too loudly on Friday night, and if we win through to Wembley, I'll just murmer very politely under my breath, "Oh, well played York!"

After the game I'll really let my hair down with a couple of sweet sherries.

It speaks volumes for Matty Blair's character that he even thought about respecting a former club - many players wouldn't have given it a second thought, or else taken even more joy in it. But let's make sure he's still playing in League 2 next season. For some reason, I'm more confident about the coming leg than I was about the home game, I think that needing to score will change our player's mentalities for the better. Either way, it's been a magnificent end to the season.

Agreed. People mentioning respect and morals? It's only football for goodness sake. If people genuinely think celebrating against a club you used to play for is classed as morally wrong or disrespectful you're in for a nasty surprise in the real world!

I have the utmost respect for Blair and his celebrations on Monday, especially considering having had to witness an over the top display from a "badge kissing" Jon Parkin after he scored for Macclesfield against us at BC in our relegation season of 03/04. He had left us less than 8 weeks previously and his goal helped consigned us to a prolonged stay in the Conference. A tasteless display and another reason why I am so desperate we can overturn our deficit on Friday night...COYR
