YORKSHIRE director of cricket Martyn Moxon expects the unpredictability in the early stages of the LV= County Championship to continue and contribute to a thrilling title race.

There have been a number of weird and wonderful results through Division One during the first quarter of a season which has seen the White Rose county win one, lose one and draw two.

Middlesex have provided the prime example of that so far.

After stunning Yorkshire by chasing down a mammoth 472 at Lord’s 11 days ago, Chris Rogers and company slipped to an innings defeat against Warwickshire at Edgbaston earlier this week.

New division one leaders Warwickshire provide Yorkshire with their fifth opponents of the campaign when they travel to Headingley tomorrow.

"I don't think anybody will run away with it this year,” said Moxon, who has also revealed his satisfaction at Yorkshire’s early season performances.

“I think it will be a case of people beating each other. It's that tight, and it's going to be an exciting season.

"I think we're shaping up well, but it shows how competitive the league is that there are very few points between the top eight teams at the minute. It's anybody's to win.

“We've shown enough with a quarter of the season gone to say that we're going to be in the mix, hopefully.

"If you are going to win things you have to have all the squad contributing at some point. Occasionally people are going to have some off days, that's the nature of the beast. But the lads are in good form.

"The lads are playing some good cricket. Take that unusual result at Lord's out of it, we have played really well in the four games.”

Warwickshire have won two, lost one and drawn one of their opening four matches to top the league by a point from Sussex. Yorkshire are nine points behind in fourth place.

"It's a big game again,” said Moxon. “This will be our fifth week on the bounce of Championship cricket, and it's a tough start to the season, physically as well as mentally.

“Top of the league we're playing. It's in our hands. If we get a good performance against them, we could be right up there."

Coach Jason Gillespie has named a 14-man squad for tomorrow’s clash. He has included England batting duo Gary Ballance and Joe Root, who are both expected to be available after one-day international duty against Scotland in Aberdeen yesterday.

Gillespie has named a larger squad than usual just in case they are not released for duty by Peter Moores. Warwickshire will also hope to be able to call upon the services of Ian Bell and Chris Woakes.

This will be overseas batsman Kane Williamson’s penultimate Championship appearance before he links up with the New Zealand squad for their tour of the West Indies later this month.

He will be replaced by Australian Aaron Finch once his Indian Premier League commitments are finished - as early as May 24 or as late as June 1 depending on whether Sunrisers Hyderabad qualify for the knockout stages.

“As soon as the IPL finishes for him, Finch will fly straight over,” added Moxon.

“Kane is available up until the Lancashire Championship match. He will be leaving us after that before coming back on July 7.

"Finch will probably go back when Kane comes back from the West Indies unless we are going into the final stages of that T20.”
