YORK Cricket Club are hoping to carry on their good form going into this weekend’s double-header when they take on Doncaster Town CC in the league tomorrow followed by an intriguing knockout tie at Scarborough CC on Sunday.

The Clifton Park-based side have won their last four matches and will look to advance to the third round of the Royal London Club Championship when they take on Scarborough CC, a competition that adds an element of excitement to the club.

Having previously won the competition (formerly known as the Kingfisher Beer Cup) in 2012, York will be hoping they can replicate their heroics and edge closer to a second final in three years.

Vice captain Nick Kay said: “It is unusual to face opposition that are in the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier so we will just have to treat it like a league match. We know their strengths and weaknesses so we will use that knowledge to our fullest.”

Despite their lowly league position, Kay dismissed that it will be an easy match for the away side; “Their league position is irrelevant because they have had some rain-affected results and they also have some proven match winners so we have to be at our best.”

They will be hoping for another stellar performance from opener Jack Leaning, who currently holds the second highest score in the competition with his 146 not out in the first round victory over Whitburn CC from the North East Premier League.

But first they have to focus their attention to an equally important match at home to Doncaster Town CC in a Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier Division match that could help push their title credentials further.

The season may only be a few games old, but York are currently sat in third position with only one defeat to their name while their opponents sit in sixth and the vice captain is sure that the seven times champions will not underestimate the South Yorkshire side’s potential.

“Doncaster Town were a top five team last year and they will up there this year so this will be a tough match against a tough team. They’re aggressive and on their day, can beat anyone as they are the most improved side in the league– we will not take this match for granted.”
