THORPE United were unable to continue their remarkable run in the York Minster Engineering Football League Reserve Cup as they went down to a 4-1 defeat to Wigginton Grasshoppers in the final at Huntington sports-field, writes Josh Luckhurst.
The match started evenly, defying the two division gap between the two sides.
But quality took its toll when Tom Derbyshire gave Grasshoppers the lead with a neat finish halfway through the first half.
Thorpe continued to apply pressure but could not capitalise on a few half-chances and the score remained 1-0 at half-time.
United knew they needed the next goal to provide a potential upset and almost got it when a deflected shot went just wide of a post.
This sparked the opposition to kick on and extend their lead when a long ball was not dealt with and Ben Thompson struck a half-volley into the top corner.
The two goal lead eased Wigginton’s nerves with Josh Hutchinson going close on two occasions before extending their lead further.
A corner was not dealt with and Chris Taylor fired a shot into the top corner.
United grabbed a goal back and missed a great chance for a second before Thompson added a fourth in stoppage time to seal victory.
