Acomb Hockey Club Men 1 travelled to Halifax during the Yorkshire League cup final competitions in a play off against Slazenger 2 seeking promotion to Division 3.

In a close encounter first half of few chances to either side Slazengers had the better possession whilst the tangerines were sound but threatened little in a disjointed performance.

Slazengers took the lead before half time when Acomb’s defence failed to clear a loose ball which was forced home.

The tangerines controlled the whole of the second half which started with Slazengers down to 10 following a yellow card.

Acomb had open chances with Ryan Forster, Pee Hilton and Nick Linfoot before the equaliser from a penalty corner routine which was forced home by joint man of the match Matt Dickenson.

Slazengers had little forward pressure but were controlled by sound work from skipper Baz Whitfield, Dave Brown, David Bell and Paul Kellett and the other joint man of the match Simon Theaker.

The tangerines pressed hard for victory, with their travelling support, but Sam Lynn blazed over the bar whilst Paul Wright controlled midfield with Dave Richardson and Mark Gibbons.

Slazengers went down to nine players with more indiscipline with only minutes remaining at the end of the second half but the tangerines had little chance to exploit the two-man advantage.

Keeper Craig Brown saved two penalty strokes which also saw the tangerines have two stokes saved in the penaly shoot out.

Then in the sudden death shoot out the tangerines succumbed in the first round to leave a 4-3 shoot defeat following the 1-1 draw and remain in division four north despite a season with only 2 defeats on the pitch in normal time.
