Dexter Blackstock to fire up Leeds United in derby
10:31am Friday 25th October 2013 in Sport
DEXTER BLACKSTOCK is poised to go straight into Leeds United’s line-up for tomorrow’s West Yorkshire derby at Huddersfield Town (12.30pm), writes Michael Wood.
United signed Blackstock, 27, on loan from Championship rivals Nottingham Forest yesterday, the striker having featured only three times for Billy Davies’ men this term.
He had moved to the City Ground from QPR in March 2009 and has scored 34 goals in 122 league appearances for the Reds.
Leeds were also close to agreeing terms with Lithuanian international and former Hearts captain Marius Zaliukas, and the defender could likewise feature tomorrow following his run-out for the development squad in midweek.
That game saw striker Noel Hunt bag a hat-trick to also put himself in first-team contention.
Leeds go to the John Smith’s Stadium looking to build on their 4-0 thrashing of Birmingham last Sunday, while Huddersfield, five places below them in 14th, want to bounce back from their 2-1 loss to Leicester – though both sides know previous results count for little given the local rivalry.
United boss Brian McDermott has praised veteran midfielder Michael Brown and Danny Pugh ahead of the game, the pair having pushed their way into the first-team party for the first time last Sunday.
McDermott said: “Michael and Danny are both training hard and the way they have conducted themselves has been superb.”
Town manager Mark Robins will see his side leapfrog Leeds on goal difference should they win and has called for a big home crowd to make a difference tomorrow.
Robins said: “It’s a good opportunity to win a match and get the bragging rights for the supporters at the same time.”
