York City Ladies beat Castleford 2-1

JAZZ Whitwell bagged a brace as York City Ladies won 2-1 at Castleford White Rose.
The visitors made a bright start to the match with Megan Bramham seeing a second-minute shot saved after breaking clear on goal.
Whitwell also saw another chance parried with Lauren Shuttleworth unable to gather the loose ball.
At the other end of the pitch, player-of-the-game Josie Hewson and Ruth Brazier were keeping things tight with the latter going on to show great vision to switch possession to Ali Smith, whose cross was pushed just wide by Bramham.
A great strike by Sara Renfrew was then saved with Bramham flagged offside as she looked to pounce on the rebound.
Having gone in at the interval goal-less, York forged in front on 48 minutes when Whitwell headed in a cross from Shuttleworth.
Castleford responded almost immediately, grabbing an equaliser from their first attack of any note, but a cross from substitute Becca Dawson saw Whitwell convert a one-on-one opportunity to secure maximum points on 73 minutes.
A Sophie Whibley goal, meanwhile, could not save City ladies reserves from a 2-1 home loss to Poppleton.
Stand-in ’keeper Fiona Burgess had kept her team on level terms during the early stages with a great fingertip save before the visitors went 1-0 up.
Helen Dalby had a header cleared off the line from a corner and Ashlee Brack fired straight at the ’keeper following good link-up play from Carol Thompson and Louise Ross.
The hosts drew level before the break through Whibley’s composed finish after Thompson’s shot was saved following good work by Kira Robinson but a second goal, conceded from a corner, handed Poppleton the points.
