STEAM rides and footplate experiences on Flying Scotsman will be highlights of the half-term week of February Family Fun at the National Railway Museum in York.

From February 18 to 26, museum visitors can take a journey back in time to experience what it was like to travel by steam train with a ride behind the iconic Flying Scotsman locomotive.

This will be a chance to take in the sights, sounds and smells of steam power when journeying through South Yard and wave to passengers on the Miniature Railway while rolling past.

For Flying Scotsman’s "most dedicated fans", footplate experiences return next month, enabling visitors to climb into the driver’s cab and make their own personal journey on the track in "the world’s most famous steam engine!.

To make this experience extra special, you can upgrade your footplate experience to include afternoon tea at the luxurious Countess of York tea room, including a glass of Prosecco," said Rebecca Fuller, the NRM's communications executive.

"Whether it's a lifelong ambition or a very special railway gift, this is an opportunity not to be missed."

For one week only, the museum’s South Yard will host a funfair with rides and stalls galore, inviting families to enjoy a day out surrounded by the history of the railways.

York Press:

"If you’re looking for a way to educate your children while still keeping them entertained, find out all about speedy locomotives in our exciting Need for Speed science show," suggested Rebecca.

"Plus, see our huge turntable in action and uncover the secrets of how a steam locomotive works.

"From the steam rides behind Flying Scotsman to storytelling, we’ve got lots of hands-on fun for the whole family. Experience all the fun of our funfair, join in with Flying Scotsman model making and take a ride on the Miniature Railway."
