A HOUSING trust has denied two health and safety charges relating to the death of a 90-year-old woman at a York care home.

Dora Strickland died in November 2011 at York Hospital, 12 days after falling from a second floor window at Red Lodge in Hawthorne Terrace, New Earswick.

An investigation was launched into her death by City of York Council and now the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust, which runs the home, is being prosecuted by the authority, with a hearing taking place yesterday at York Crown Court.

Barrister Mark Balysz lodged not guilty pleas on behalf of the trust to a charge of breaching a general duty to someone other than an employee, and to another charge of failing to make a suitable and sufficient assessment of risks to the health and safety of a non-employee.

The case was adjourned by the Recorder of York, Judge Paul Batty, for a trial to take place at the court next March.

The hearing is expected to last between five and seven days.
