YORK’S innovative mutual model for libraries has been praised in an independent national report.

Explore York Libraries and Archives has been cited as an example of innovation by local authorities, in a report by publisher William Sieghart and an independent panel for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Chief Executive Fiona Williams said: “We’re delighted that our innovation has been recognised by this report. We are one of the first library services in the UK to transform in this way and we are lending our expertise to other authorities interested in our approach.

“We are all passionate about what we can achieve to promote a love of reading, support for learning, provide a first rate information service and act as hubs for the community where residents can get involved and join Explore as members.”

The report’s case study on York praises Explore’s “clear voice and purpose”, and partnerships with other mutuals and health services like GP practices.
