PLANS to transform a York community centre and its garden into a hub for residents in the area are to go on display next month.

Volunteers who run Foxwood Community Centre are putting on a three day event to tell people in the area how they hope to transform the space to at a "Great Community Challenge" in October to make it more useful and accessible.

They want to see the current garden transformed by the addition of raised beds and a barbecue, making a space that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, or hired out for birthday parties and special events.

The plans will also extend to Foxwood Park, opposite the community centre, where the committee is hoping the area can be improved with the help of other local groups.

The plans will be available for people to see at the Community Centre on Monday, September 1 from 10am-5pm; Tuesday, September 2 from 1-4pm; and Wednesday, September 3 9am-5pm.

At the end of the display the centre's AGM will be held at 7pm on Wednesday, September 3, when the volunteers hope to elect a new committee to run the facility.

With the loss of its council funding earlier this year, the community centre no longer has a full time caretaker so volunteers have had to take on the mantle of day to day maintenance at the centre, as well as organisation, bookings, and finance.

They have appealed for help from local people to run the centre, saying without more volunteers they could be forced to close the facility down.

Volunteer Sue Galloway said: "We will welcome people to the AGM with open arms.

"We won't expect people to do any more than they are capable of, and volunteers don't have to sit on committees. If they just want to volunteer to do particular tasks, that would be fine."
