Selby College students and staff celebrated an overall 99% pass rate.
The results provided a double celebration for one Selby family as student Calvin Pang achieved an amazing A* in Maths and 3 A grades in Chemistry, Physics and Further Maths, following in the footsteps of his older sister Vicky, who just three years ago gained 2 A* grades, an A and a B grade at Selby College to secure a place at Leeds University to study Accountancy and Finance.
Calvin however, has his sights firmly set on a career as a Mechanical Engineer and will be heading down to Bristol University to take up his place on the Engineering Degree course. He said, “I’m so pleased I chose Selby College, I’ve managed to achieve a great set of results and made some great friends here.”
A feeling mirrored by fellow high-achiever Michael Lewis, who gained 2 A* grades in Maths and Physics, an A in AS Level Further Maths and a B in Chemistry and who is also going to study Engineering but at the University of Sheffield. He said, “I started revising in February and didn’t go out at all, but I still didn’t expect to get an A* in Physics. I’m so pleased that all the hard work paid off.”

Lewis Connell, who achieved 1 A* grade in Maths and 2 A grades in Accounting and Further Maths and is going to study an Apprenticeship in Accounting at Durham University where, at the end of his six year course, he will not only gain a Degree, but will also have an industry recognised qualification and relevant on the job experience.
Rob Thacker and Georgia Ashby both gained 1 A* grade and 2 A grades. Although both secured A* grades in Maths and A grades in Further Maths, Rob also gained an A grade in Physics while Georgia’s second A grade was in Biology. Both will now go on to study maths related courses at university, for Rob that will be alongside Economics and Finance at the University of Bristol, while Georgia will head to the London School of Economics to study Maths.
Megan Kirby, had extra reason to celebrate just 24 hours after passing her driving test she learned she had gained an A* grade in English Language and Literature, an A grade in Psychology and a B grade in History, securing her place at the University of Sheffield where she will study Psychology.
She said, “I’m absolutely ecstatic with my results, I don’t quite believe it. I was targeted Cs so I just worked really hard and it’s surreal that it’s actually paid off.” Her mum Claire Kirby thanked Selby College saying, “I’m very happy and incredibly proud of Megan, but she couldn’t have done it without the help and support of all of her tutors.”

City of York Council said: Children’s Services leaders in York today congratulated learners across the city on achieving another excellent set of results in this year’s A-level examinations.
Provisional results for York school sixth forms and York College show that the very high standards of previous years have been maintained. Initial results for the city indicate that attainment is likely to be well above national levels.
Early results for York school sixth forms* show that 41 per cent of students achieved three or more A*-B grades, which maintains the very high standards of previous years and is significantly higher than the 2013 national figure of 28 per cent. 97 per cent of students achieved three or more A*-E grades - an increase of two percentage points from 2013 - and the provisional results indicate that this is likely to be well above national levels.
Councillor Janet Looker cabinet member for Education, Children and Young People said: “I would like to congratulate all the students from our schools and York College on their A Level results. Their grades are testament to their hard work, as well as the support of their teachers, parents and carers.
“A Levels mark a real transition for many students into a new chapter of their lives, whether it be university, training or work and I would like to wish them every success in whatever they choose to do.”
Jon Stonehouse, Director of Children’s Services, Education and Skills, City of York Council, said: “These results illustrate once again that York has some of the best secondary schools, colleges and teaching staff in the country. I’m confident that this supportive approach will enable us to continue to improve educational outcomes for all the young people in the city.”
North Yorkshire County Council said: A-level students across North Yorkshire have achieved high levels of success in their results this year, with the majority of the county’s schools showing improvements once again in student point scores.
Early figures show the majority of North Yorkshire schools recording outstanding A-level scores, maintaining the very high standards of previous years. North Yorkshire has consistently been in the top ten per cent of authorities nationally for A-level success in past years and these early indications suggest we are likely to have maintained that performance. Results in so far reveal an improvement in the average point score per entry for the fourth successive year.
While the full county-wide picture will not be known immediately, it is clear already that the county has a good deal to celebrate as these top-level results mean its students are well-placed to go on to the higher education course, training or employment position of their choice.
North Yorkshire sends a higher proportion of students to Oxbridge, the top Russell Group universities and the top third of high performing higher eduction institutions than most other local authorities.
“I would like to congratulate all the young people of North Yorkshire on their results this morning. These outstanding results mean that that they are in a very good position to to take up the higher education and training places of their choice; that they can step out into the world with high aspirations and with confidence,” said County Councillor Arthur Barker, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Schools said: “There is a great deal in these achievements to be proud of and they are a tribute to the application and hard work of students, the support of families and to the dedication of school staff and the quality of teaching in North Yorkshire.
“These very high standards mean that the nation’s most prestigious universities are open to the county’s students across a wide range of subjects as well as the widest range of vocational courses, training and employment. We congratulate our students and wish them all well in their future lives and on which ever pathway they choose to take.”
The county’s schools have robust systems of support in place to help students who might have missed their first choices gain alternative places through the university clearing system, or to help them look for alternative paths into employment, apprenticeships or training. Record numbers of university places are still available and students could still get places even if they miss their grades.

Students at Rossett School in Harrogate are celebrating after receiving their A Levels.
The overall pass rate for the school was 98 per cent, with 17 per cent A* and A grades (an increase on last year), and 37 per cent A*-B.
Headteacher Pat Hunter said: “This year’s Year 13 have worked incredibly hard for these results and they thoroughly deserve this success.
“We knew in advance that government policy meant all exam papers would be marked more harshly than in previous years, so we weren’t sure what to expect. However, we are thrilled that our students have overcome this difficulty to earn some truly outstanding results.
“It is also a reflection of the help and support they have had from their families and the staff at Rossett School. We couldn’t be happier for them and look forward to hearing more success stories from them as they move on to the next stage of their lives.”
As well as strong overall results for the school, some individual students achieved particularly impressive grades.
Hannah Davy, Sofia Hain, Ellie Higgins, Christopher Cullingworth got all As and A*s.
Eleanor Morrow, Benjamin Parker, Daniel Stenson, Jenny McLoughlin, Luke Annett, Tyler Megson, Christine Clark, Olivia Arion, Ross Harrison and Ashley Thompson all achieved two As and a B.
Triplets Ross, James and Natasha Harrison gained nine A levels between them and all exceeded their target grades. Having gone through most of their experiences together – even hitting national headlines last year when they all passed their driving tests on the same day – they will now follow very different paths from September.
Ross will study mechanical engineering at Newcastle and James takes up a place studying French and business management at Sheffield, while Natasha is taking a gap year to work and travel.
At Joseph Rowntree School in York pupils and staff are celebrating their best ever A-Level results achieving 59% of entries at grades A*-B and 86% of entries at grades A*-C.
This achievement is testament to the hard work of the whole school community, and we are very proud to be able to celebrate student success at every level, with student destinations including Russell Group Universities and Apprenticeships within the local area. Outstanding individual performances include Jacob George (A*A*AA), Jack Birkin (A*AAA), Ellie Green A*AAA, James Kelly (A*AA) and Jessica Burchell (AAA).

At All Saint's RC School in York head teacher, Bill Scriven said: "Amongst reports of the overall national pass rate in A-Level exams declining, All Saints Sixth Form is delighted to have gained an astonishing set of results this year. The number of A* and A grades is excellent.
"Especially notable achievements include Pierre Wheller, who sat 6 A-Levels and gained 4 As and 2A*s, Emily Stronach, who attained 3 A*s, and the great number of our students whose unrelenting hard work meant that they achieved above their expected progress.
“These results are the outstanding consequence of the immense determination shown by teachers and pupils. All Saints Sixth Form has an open doors policy, and the support and commitment for pupils of all abilities to exceed even their highest expectations must be celebrated today.”
In Ryedale, at Malton School it's been another very good year of A-Level results which has seen Malton School’s Sixth Form consolidate a position of strength. Now for the 8th consecutive year the school has exceeded the equivalent of an average of 3 A grades per student.
The average total points score has increased to 910 (270 points is an A grade). The national average is usually in the region of 780 points so this result is significantly high and is likely to be one of the best in North Yorkshire again.
The other main measures are also positive: the average points score per subject entry is 211; the percentage of all grades achieved at grades A*-B is 46%; the overall pass rate is 98%; and importantly, the school has added value at least in line with national expectations. All this has been achieved against the backdrop of a national picture of uncertainty this year due to the changes in the rules surrounding exam regulations, with all schools unsure of the impact these changes will have.
Head teacher Rob Williams said, “I am very proud of this group of students. They have worked hard for these results and I wish them all the very best for the future. I am also proud of our experienced staff team who show such commitment in helping the students to achieve. Once again nearly all the students have received university offers or have secured employment, the vast majority being successful in moving on to their first choice next career step.”
More than half of Ashville College’s A-Level students have achieved at least an A* or A in this year’s exams which also recorded the College’s best-ever value added results at A Level.
Whilst 62 per cent of all exam results were graded A* - B, the overall pass rate was 96 per cent, with 54 per cent of those sitting their exams achieving an A* or A grade in at least one subject. With value added results improving year on year at A Level, this year’s value-added outcome for the College was double its previous best, achieved last year.

While many students achieved multiple A* grades, William Dyson topped the list achieving four A*s grades.
And there was cause for a triple celebration when triplets Alex, George and Zoe Ellaby passed ten A-Levels between them. Alex achieved three As, brother George an A and three Bs and sister Zoe an A and two Bs.

Shreyas Gopal is a day pupil who lives locally, he was Head Boy in the Upper Sixth and is going to St Catherine’s College, Cambridge to study Economics.
Dorothy Zhong comes from Wu Hu City in China and joined the school as a boarder in the sixth form. She is planning to take up a place to study Engineering at Cambridge. Kate Pratt has set her sights on a career in law and will be studying for a law degree at Durham.
Subjects and universities chosen by the other top performers include Civil Engineering at Imperial College, Biological Sciences at Birmingham and Theatre and Performance Studies at Warwick.
Of particular note is the A* achieved by Rebekah Hesmondhalgh for her Extended Project Qualification. This qualification involves the completion of a major piece of evaluative research in an area of personal interest, is undertaken in the student’s own time, and is highly regarded by universities as an important transition qualification in preparation for university study. The EPQ is worth half an A2 subject for university entrance.
Rebekah, who joined us from Woldgate College for the sixth form, chose to study an artefact based project on Theatre in Education for which she wrote a piece of theatre on pastoral issues targeted at a teenage audience. This then had to be performed and Rebekah had to devise a project to analyse its efficacy, and on the basis of her results, write a proposal for further research. The EPQ is a demanding qualification and to gain an A* is outstanding.
Tadcaster Grammar School’s A-Level results are in.
Out-going head teacher Geoff Mitchell, said: “Yet again the school has bucked the national trend with this year’s A-level results.
"This year there has been a national fall of 1% in the percentage number of students gaining A*-B grades with a figure of 52%.
"At Tadcaster Grammar School there has been a 6% increase, meaning 57% of our grades were A*-B. This has enabled all of our students to gain their preferred or insurance choice of university, including Oxford and Cambridge. Over a quarter of the grades achieved were at A* and A."
The hard work invested by our students, supported by all the staff with whom they engaged, has ensured that they are able to continue to pursue their dreams and this morning was a time of joy and celebration”.

In York Archbishop Holgate's School is once again celebrating record breaking results.
In September 2013 the school received external recognition for student performance across the Sixth Form, placing the Sixth Form in the top ten percent of (ALPs affiliated) schools nationally. The Sixth Form was also ranked first nationally for its outstanding vocational results.
Results this year are once again outstanding, matching and in some cases exceeding those from last summer.
Head teacher Andrew Daly said he was delighted to see the hard-work of students being rewarded with excellent grades.
He said: "The commitment and hard work of our students is evident in another set of outstanding results. I would like to thank our students for all their tremendous efforts and recognise the commitment of our staff in delivering outstanding teaching and excellent pastoral care that have once again enabled our Sixth Form students to excel."
The school has achieved an average total point score per student of 961 and an average points score per qualification of 224. The average UCAS point score entry is 433 – a record figure. 49% of students gained three or more A-Levels (or equivalent) at grades A*-B.
Mr Daly said: “With a clear track record of outstanding results, a broad curriculum and outstanding teaching, Archbishop Holgate’s Sixth Form is now firmly established as an outstanding provider of sixth form education both locally and nationally."

Pupils at St Peter’s School in York are celebrating their A-Level results, after 40 pupils – 34% of the year group - achieved straight A or A* grades.
A number of pupils achieved all A* passes in their exams, including Head Boy and Captain of the 1st XV Toby Simpson, who had four passes at the top grade. Also scoring four A* grades were Sebastian Dobson and Samuel Philpott, while Jennifer Frazer, Luka Pajovic, Zoe Pindar, Alexander Reeds, Alice Rhodes, Nicholas Ubhi and Johnny Walmsley passed all three of their exams at A*.
Overall, 21.8% of all passes were at A* level, up from 18.6% last year.
Leo Winkley, Head Master of St Peter’s School, said: “The removal of the January exam session has made this year’s A Levels a ‘one-take movie’ in which all our pupils have had to be well prepared and at their individual best in the exam hall. It’s very pleasing that more than a third of our leavers achieved straight A*/A grades, and in the context of a national squeeze on top grades I’m very happy to see an increase in our A* pass rate to 21%.
“Despite such good grades, the real stories are the individual journeys that our youngsters are setting out on today. Our pupils and teaching staff have worked extremely hard for these excellent results and our leavers can now look to the next stage of their lives with clarity. Whilst the results they have achieved in these exams are passports to further learning, the memories, friendships and wider experiences of an excellent all-round education will be just as important to them in the months and years to come.”
St Peter’s School, founded in 627AD, is one of the oldest schools in the world, and one of the UK’s leading co-educational boarding schools.
Students across the East Riding Council area are celebrating exam success, as many schools have improved their A-level results, with increases in both average points score per candidate and average points score per entry up on the previous year.
As a result, many of the 1,500 young people in East Riding school sixth forms will be moving on in September to the education or employment of their choice.
The 2014 A-level results build on the success of continual improvement in A-level results over the last six years.
Early indications show that East Riding sixth forms have maintained their successful trend against the background of a national fall in the proportion of A-levels awarded top grades for the third year in a row.
The average point score per candidate has risen steadily in East Riding school sixth forms, exceeding the national average from 2009 onwards.
The national data showing the destinations of pupils from sixth forms, published recently for 2012, show that 79 per cent of East Riding sixth form students with A-levels were in further or higher education, five per cent more than the national figure.
There were also a high proportion of East Riding A-level students going onto higher education in the latest figures to be published: 63 per cent in 2012, higher than the national average for state-funded schools. The proportion of young people with A-levels going into apprenticeships is also above the national average.
Councillor Julie Abraham, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s portfolio holder for children, young people and education, said: “It is encouraging to see that is appears that students in the East Riding have done so well this year.
“With results like this they will be well prepared for whichever path they want to go down in their future careers.”

At Fulford School in York the A-level results of A*-B at 57.27% and average points score per student of 414.8 are both up on last year and 28.5 % students have gained 3 or more A grades and a record 12.3% A* grades have been awarded.
Head teacher, Lorna Savage, said: "I would like to congratulate our students on their excellent results and we are delighted with our outstanding performance at both A-Level and AS Level this year and in what this means for individual students and their families.

At York College students are celebrating a 99.6 per cent pass rate
There were more than 3,500 AS and A-Level exam entries this summer at York College and the college’s A-Level faculty is proud to announce an A-Level pass rate of 99.6%. This means York College’s A-Level results remain significantly above the national average for the twentieth consecutive year.
25 students gained at least three A* or A grades and the college is also delighted to report a 100% pass rate in 38 A-Level subjects.
Oxford and Cambridge university places were successfully secured by three students:
Jess Lister formerly of Howden School and Technology College will study History at Emmanuel College, Cambridge (Grades A*AAB)
Joseph Smith (formerly of St Peter’s School) will study Physics at Christ Church, Oxford (Grades A*A*A*A*A*)
Paulina Barszcz (formerly of Highbury High School, Wakefield) will study German and Russian at St Catherine’s College, Oxford
Joseph Smith is this year’s top performing student. Joseph, formerly of St Peter’s School, achieved a remarkable five A* grades in Maths, Further Maths, Additional Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
Jack Hanslope, formerly of Barlby High School achieved an impressive four A* grades in Maths,Further Maths, Chemistry, and Physics plus an A in Additional Further Maths (AS Level). He will study Maths at University of Exeter.
Another top performing student is Sarah Coolican (formerly of Harrogate Ladies College) who achieved 3 A*s and a B grade: Government and Politics (A*), History (A*), Sociology (A*) and Psychology (B). Sarah will study Politics and East European Studies at University College London.

Robin Ashwin (A*AAAB), formerly of Market Weighton School, is going to The University of York to study Biochemistry.
Samantha Keenaghan (AAAA and A* for Extended Project Qualification), formerly of Manor Church of England Academy, is going to Durham University to study Psychology.
The college can also report excellent vocational results this year. Vocational results are still coming in and so far students have achieved an outstanding 281 Triple Distinctions, of which 118 are Triple Distinction* grades (equivalent to 3 A*s at A Level).

At Queen Margaret’s at Escrick Dunnington girl, Jodie Miller, has secured a place at the prestigious Stern School of Business at New York University. Jodie, who attended Queen Margaret’s in Escrick and was head girl at the all girls’ school, will be majoring in finance with a liberal arts curriculum.
She is one of two girls from the school who have secured a place at an American University. Sandra Liang has secured a place at the much respected Rhode Island School of Design. Emily Scott, from Middlesbrough, has also achieved a place at the Royal College of Music in London. Emily’s principal study will be voice (soprano).
Other university destinations for the pupils include Fitzwilliam College in Cambridge, LSE, UCL, Durham, Bristol, Exeter, Liverpool and other top Russell Group Universities.
Queen Margaret’s acting head, Carole Cameron, said: “This year our girls have more than met the school standard of aiming high and exceeding their expectations. 2014 has proved to be a record-breaking year, with girls across the spectrum out-performing what was predicted. The school in Escrick is celebrating their best ever A-level results, reporting over 32% of entries achieving the highly sought after A* grade (for which candidates must score 90% or more on final papers), a significant increase on last year. 50% of the girls at QM gained at least one A* grade and 13% gained 3A* or more. This year, QM is pleased to report 66% of all entries achieved A* or A grades rising well above the national and Independent school averages.
Overall, 85% of candidates were awarded A*, A or B, with a 100% pass rate.
In North Yorkshire, Easingwold School is also reporting its best ever A-level results with one sttudent achieving full marks in A-level maths, earning a place at Cambridge University.
More than one sixth of students at the school achieved straight A* or A grades at A-level with one third of A-level entries graded A* or A 62% of A level entries graded A*, A or B.
Students, staff and parents today celebrated best A level results in the school’s history. Overall the results continued the improvement seen during the previous two years. The percentage of entries graded A*-A increased by 9% to 33%, compared with 24% last year; those grades A*-B increased by 16% to 62%. The average point score per entry rose to 220 compared with 207 last year, equivalent to nearly half a grade for every A level entry or one grade in every two entries.
Ten students (16% of the A level cohort) achieved straight A* or A grades. One of them, George Hawkswell, gained 3 A* grades and an A (including full marks in A level maths), winning him a place to study engineering at Cambridge University. Another, Robbie James, gained 3 A* grades, and will read mathematics at Edinburgh University.

Calum Mowatt who will study philosophy at Edinburgh University after gaining three A grades;
Connie O’Neill, who achieved three A grades and will read zoology at Sheffield University;
Kathryn Bolton who will study biomedical science at Sheffield University after gaining one A* and three A grades;
Luke Turnbull who has won a place to read natural sciences at Durham University after gaining three A* grades and an A;
Ben Lockyer who is also heading to Durham University to study natural sciences after achieving two A* and two A grades;
Emily Frane who will read sociology at York University after achieving an A* and two A grades;
Luke Young who has also won a place at Durham University to study biological sciences after achieving two A* grades and an A;
Alistair Reilly who will read architecture at Liverpool University after gaining an A*, A and B;
Liberty Bramall who study performance costume at Edinburgh University after achieving an A*, and two B grades.
Head teacher Phil Benaiges said: "We are absolutely delighted by the magnificent results gained by our students in their A levels. Last summer we were the best performing comprehensive sixth from in North Yorkshire in terms of academic progress, as well as being in the top 10% of schools nationally; this year we have done even better.
"Whilst these headline results are clearly good news for our school and its wider community, the real importance is that, yet again, students who choose to study A levels at Easingwold School achieve very well and secure places at good universities - a fitting tribute to their hard work as well as the dedication and professionalism of staff and governors."
A-level results improve again at Harrogate Ladies' College
Students and staff at the college are celebrating a superb set of A-level results, having posted another year on year improvement. 23% of students passed with straight A*s and/or A’s.
There was an increase in percentages of A* (to 14%), A*-B (to 71%) and A*- E (to 99.5%). Over 80% of girls can therefore confirm their university place immediately.
Among those celebrating are head girl Giorgi Passerello (Medicine, Edinburgh) and her Deputies Dasha Pospyelova (Neuroscience, Leeds), Katie Smith (Combined Arts, Durham) and Kelly Jiang (Fashion Marketing, London).
Our three High Commission of Brunei scholars also performed magnificently, winning places at Lancaster, Warwick and Durham with an enviable collection of A* and A grades between them.
Principal Sylvia Brett said: "I am incredibly proud of the girls for their hard work and dedication and today they get their reward for that effort.
"Studying at HLC typically adds one grade to the value of estimated exam results in every subject and I therefore take this opportunity to thank my colleagues for all they do to inspire and nurture our girls.
"On a personal note, four of our leavers will be going to my alma mater, Durham University; I hope they have as many happy times there as I had."
Head of Sixth Form Richard Tillett said: "We are delighted that the A*-B percentage has increased, especially since this is the first year without an AS January examination session.
"We offer all the girls our warmest congratulations and best wishes for the future."
The Mount girls school in York is celebrating another year of A-Level success with the school seeing its highest ever percentage of A* grades at 24 per cent and half of all girls achieving at least one A*.
Principal, Julie Lodrick, said: “We are incredibly proud of the girls’ achievements this year. Not only have they succeeded in gaining fantastic A-Level grades that have got them to world-class universities, they have also developed an impressive range of skills that will ensure their future success.
Two girls have accepted offers to study at Oxford University; head girl Holly Gardiner, to read PPE at Hertford and Maddy Taylor, who will study Classics at St Hilda’s.
Three girls have achieved the required grades to read medicine. Fathin Mumtazah Hj Abdul Manap and Yan Ling Pang, both Deputy Head girls and Brunei Scholars will study at Leicester University and Hull and York Medical School respectively. They will be joined in the profession by Amy Granville who will be studying at Nottingham University.
Alice Boddy will be taking up a much coveted place at The Northern Ballet School to pursue her ambition to dance professionally.
Mention should also be made of Adeline Poh, the school’s third Brunei Scholar, who, after achieving 4 A*s, will study Chemistry at Durham.
At Bootham School in York students celebrated another clutch of excellent results. Among them is GB team modern pentathlete, Adam Price, who achieved five top grades, including three A*s and an A at A/S level.
Adam, who has represented the country at the European Games in Russia and the World Championships in China, plans to study Architecture at Bath University.
Toby Jackson, who also gained a clutch of top grades which secured his place to read English at Cambridge, was particularly pleased with his 100% marks in each of the English modules.
His tutor and Deputy Head, Suzanne Hall, said: “Toby is certainly one of the most intelligent students I have ever taught and it’s been a real privilege to have him in my tutor group.”
Commenting on the results overall, head teacher, Jonathan Taylor said: “A good set of results at Bootham once again. No doubt our league table ranking will be as strong as ever, but within the cohort we have already spotted some potential marking anomalies which we will be sending back to the exam boards. As I have stated previously, until the exam boards can be relied upon, errors will continue to blight results day for students and their teachers alike.”
With nearly one third of the students at Bootham gaining 3 or more A grades, some of the other top performers include Sally Foster who plans to read Classics at Oxford, Mimi Evagora-Campbell who will be going to Cambridge to read Philosophy and Sophie Wood who plans to study Computer Science at Cambridge.
