A BURST water main and a collapsed sewer led to the closure of two main roads in York and North Yorkshire.

The 12 inch mains burst on the A19 Doncaster Road at Brayton, near Selby, while the sewer collapsed in Carr Lane, York.

Yorkshire Water said it had to put a diversion in place while it carried out repair work at the burst, which happened in the early hours of yesterday.

"We'd like to apologise to any customers affected by the burst and any motorists that use this route," said a spokesman,.

North Yorkshire Police said officers were called out at 12.40am yesterday to a burst between the Brayton Lane junction and the Fox Hill Lane junction, and put a temporary diversion in place until highways officials arrived on the scene. It said the road surface had been damaged.

North Yorkshire County Council said it would assess the damage to the road surface once the repairs to the main had been completed.

The sewer collapse in Carr Lane, just off the A59 Boroughbridge Road, emerged after a local resident contacted Yorkshire Water to report internal flooding to their property over the weekend, said a spokesman for the water company.

"Upon further investigation, it was discovered that a nearby sewer had collapsed, requiring reconstructive work," he said.

"Pumping is taking place to reduce water levels in the area and repair work to the sewer will take place over the coming days, resulting in a temporary closure of Carr Lane.

"We are aiming to have the work completed later this week and would like to apologise to any customers affected by this issue."
