A DRUNK reveller who left a York paramedic requiring hospital treatment has avoided jail.

Aiden Bell, 21, fell unconscious during a night out in Leeds last month, but turned on the YorMed medics when they tried to help him.

Bell attacked two paramedics when they called police because he refused treatment in the back of their ambulance on June 22 at 5am.

One man needed treatment at Leeds General Infirmary after he was punched and kicked in the unprovoked attack.

Bell, of Oatland Drive, Leeds, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault by beating and one of assaulting a police officer, who turned up to assist the YorMed staff.

He was given a 12 week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to carry out 100 hours unpaid work, pay £200 compensation to the victims, £85 costs and an £80 victims surcharge at Leeds Magistrates' Court.

Ashley Mason, chief officer for the York-based independent ambulance service, said he was pleased with the result handed down by magistrates.

Mr Mason said: "He was originally unconscious but they managed to rouse him.

"He wasn't interested so he walked off but collapsed again, and when the police were called he charged at my staff.

"I think the sentence was fair.

"The judge has given him community service and that sends out a message that public servants are here to help and shouldn't be assaulted.

"We often come across people like this but it's how you deal with them.

"It's rare that it gets this bad because most of the staff are able to calm them down or reassure them."
