TESCO has chosen York as the location for its first in-store Giraffe concessions in the region.

The supermarket giant bought the restaurant chain in March last year for £48.6 million in a move aimed at creating "retail destinations" for customers.

At the time Tesco said it planned to open Giraffe restaurants in around ten Tesco Extra stores over the next few years.

To date eight of the "world food" branded Giraffe restaurants have opened within, or next to, Tesco stores in the UK, the nearest of which is in Newcastle.

As part of the latest restaurant venture by Tesco, plans have been submitted to City of York Council to create a Giraffe at the store's Askham Bar site in Tadcaster Road.

The application outlines plans to install a Giraffe restaurant on the ground floor, in the north east corner of the store, with an outside seating area to be created under the existing roof peak, covered by a canvas awning.

As part of the plans the current Tesco cafe in the mezzanine area will be removed.

The planning application states the move will create a total of 30 jobs, made up of 15 part time and 15 full time. However it is not yet known if some of these will be made up of jobs from the existing cafe.

Matthew Stevenson, planning agent acting for Tesco, said: "The proposal does not amend any factors important to the accessibility of the site.

"The proposal for the new Giraffe will keep the majority of the existing store features with some slight additions of new windows, signage and new materials are the external Giraffe area.

"Its finishing materials are new timber cladding around existing columns, new steel frame screening with canvas banner infill, new aluminium doors and windows, new canvas awning over external seating area."

The new addition to the Tesco store will see the arrival of the second Giraffe restaurant in York following the opening of the chain's first eatery in the city at the Vangarde Shopping Centre, at Monks Cross in May.

The chain, which predominantly operates in London and the South, also recently opened a restaurant at the new Leeds Trinity Shopping Centre.

The plan application for the new restaurant at Tesco in Tadcaster Road are due to be determined by the council by September 4.
