A POLICE car crashed into a York beck while its driver was pursuing a car that had failed to stop for officers.

North Yorkshire Police said the force's vehicle was damaged in the incident in Hempland Lane, but neither of the officers inside was injured, and nor was any member of the public.

A spokesman said that at about 3pm on Saturday, a blue Ford Fiesta in Melrosegate failed to stop for police officers.

“Following a short pursuit, by a trained officer, the police vehicle left the road on Hempland Lane, when it sustained damage and had to be recovered," he said.

“An 18-year-old York man was later arrested on suspicion of failing to stop. He has now been released on bail to allow for further police inquiries.”

A local resident told The Press he was coming back from the park with his children when he saw one police car, followed by others. He said a police BMW 5 had fallen into the stream next to a bridge.
