TOUR de France banners went on display in York's historic Guildhall ahead of the race coming to the city on July 6.

Some 60 banners created by about 500 volunteers from 50 groups using templates made by five Quilt Museum and Gallery volunteers have been brought together by City of York Council at the Guildhall.

The colourful contributions are now ready for the finishing touches of the artists from the Quilt Museum and Gallery on Peasholme Green, some of whom viewed the collection on Monday.

Together, they committed more than 100 hours to make 44 template banners, each 15 feet long, using space and equipment donated by the Quilt Museum and Gallery. The volunteers have also decorated two banners for The Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles.

Cllr Sonja Crisp, cabinet member for tourism, said: “The work of these volunteers has been fundamental to this project, and demonstrates how ready and willing people across the city have been to freely share their time and talents to Be Part of It.”

The project is part of the council’sYork: Be Part of It arts and cultural festival which has more than120 events, projects, performances and exhibitions taking part.

The Quilt Museum and Gallery currently has a small exhibition entitled ‘Quilts inspired by le Tour de France’ which has 15 new pieces of patchwork and quilting created by Museum and Gallery volunteers which has been inspired by the Grand Depart. This exhibition runs until August 30 and is open Monday Saturday 10-4pm.
