LIFESAVERS in York are supporting a national campaign to help prevent drowning.

Members of Ebor Life Saving Club at Energise gym have teamed up with the Royal Lifesaving Society to run a Life Saving Taster session for anyone over the age of eight, to promote Drowning Prevention Week.

The session includes learning how to throw a rope and reach people in distress, and the national campaign will see schools, leisure centres, businesses and lifesaving clubs around the country hold activities to raise awareness of how to be safe in and around water.

Marie Taylor from Ebor Life Saving Club said: “Shockingly drowning is the third highest cause of accidental death in children in the UK. Around 400 people drown in the UK each year, and thousands more suffer l near-drowning experiences, many resulting in life changing injuries. We are happy to support RLSS to reduce these numbers by informing our pupils about how to be safe near water.”

The event will take place at 8.30pm on Friday, June 27, at Energise. To find out more, go to eborlsc.co.uk
