MORE than 25 people have been arrested for drink driving in the first week of June, with one man more than three times the legal limit.

North Yorkshire Police's latest drink and drug driving campaign on Sunday, June 1, which focuses on younger drivers and raising awareness of driving the morning after, especially with the World Cup beginning this week.

A total of 27 people were arrested, with 18 charged to appear at court, and one person also tested positive for cannabis use. A 52-year-old man from Northallerton was arrested in Bedale at 2.50pm last Tuesday, and a breathalyser showed he had 120mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, when the legal limit is 35mg. A 64-year-old man from York is the oldest to be charged, and was arrested on the A19 near Thirsk, at 5pm on Saturday.

Traffic Sergeant Andy Morton, of the Force’s Roads Policing Group, is leading this summer’s drink drive campaign in North Yorkshire. He said: “If you choose to take the risk of driving under the influence of drink or drugs, officers are out there waiting to catch you.

“If you are caught, you face the prospect of losing your driving licence, receiving a hefty fine and even the possibility of going to prison. With the FIFA World Cup due to start on Thursday, I urge people to plan ahead if they are going out to watch the matches, to make sure that they plan ahead and arrange transport home."
