YORK street performer Purpleman has made it to the Syrian border with Turkey with his delivery of donated toys from the people of York.

He travelled to the Turkish town of Antakya close to the Syrian border with Terry Brett from York's Pyramid Gallery at the weekend, and has since then been looking for a way to deliver the 1,000 soft toys to needy children.

Terry, whose daughter lives in Antakya, has been posting updates on the pair's progress online.

In blog posts on Monday and Tuesday, Terry wrote that the pair had arrived safely in the country but had been hit with an excess baggage charge for the toys.

Over the last few days they had met refugee workers from Save the Children about visiting a refugee camp for displaces Syrian families in Turkey.

Purpleman had bought a second hand bike in Turkey to paint purple and replace the purple bike he poses on in York streets.

Now, in his most recent update, Terry said the pair had had "great success" and helped many struggling families in the towns around Antakya.

They are due to return to the UK today after five days away.

he two men worked together on a charity art exhibition at Terry's Pyramid Gallery, which helped raise the funds for the trip.

Before leaving York, they thanked the people of York for their help and support.

Purpleman said: "We have had 1,000 soft toys donated, which tells me people recognise this is all about love."

My only concern is about the items he's taking over. If Save the Children have specifically requested toys then the man is a superstar. If he set off with toys with no clear idea of who they were for then I'm scratching my head in confusion.
