VISITORS to York Minister will be able to enjoy more than history when they emerge from its walls to face temptation - from a new al fresco catering scheme.

Cathedral bosses are concerned that despite the banquet of heritage on the site, the fabric of the building simply does not allow them to offer tasty treats to the crowds.

But now emerging from the depths of the Minster, they will be greeted by a vintage caravan decked out in candy pink livery stationed in the grounds of Dean’s Park.

Cupcakes will be topping the menu until November for summer visitors flocking to the traditional 1970s caravan – which has been nicknamed ‘Flo’.

They can stretch out in traditional deckchairs while dining – to complete the British Summer theme.

The tourism boost has been dreamed up by Crumbs Cupcakery in College Street, who have secured a plum plot close to the West Door of York Minster.

As well as Ice cream and cupcakes, hot and cold drinks will be available to cool down those recovering from a climb to the top of the Minster’s Central Tower.

Events manager, Stephanie O’Gorman said: “With the Minster itself packed with exciting displays, exhibitions and even its very own underground visitor attraction, Revealing York Minster, we simply do not have the room to offer catering within the cathedral walls.

“But we’re confident that our visitors will be happy to enjoy the superb cakes and treats available from the Crumbs team just outside the West Door.

“Of course, with Dean’s Park also proving a popular venue for picnickers and those seeking some al fresco tranquillity during the main tourism season, they’ll also be able to pick up an ice-cream or delicious coffee.”

The wares will be freshly baked by Crumbs Cupcakery owner Danielle Goodhand using locally-sourced ingredients, from free-range eggs from a Driffield farm, to coffee by Taylors of Harrogate.

She said: “Within the Cupcakery, we try and make everyone that walks through the door feel as if we are welcoming them to our house, so we’re hoping that we can make our caravan in Dean’s Park feel like we’re sharing a fantastic day out.

“Customer feedback suggests that we make the best cupcakes in the city, so we’re excited to be sharing them with even more Minster visitors – let’s just hope that the sun shines so that everyone can enjoy this beautiful setting for their tasty treats.”

Flo will be open daily until November 2, from 10am to 5pm. For more information visit www.yorkminster.org.
