COUNTRY air and a positive attitude - that's the secret to a long life according to one great grandmother who is celebrating her 100th birthday today.

Clara Suggitt, who was born in Markington, moved to Whenby as a baby where she grew up with her parents John and Margaret Peacock who were both farmers before moving to Cornborough Hall near Sheriff Hutton.

Along with her four sisters Margaret, Elizabeth, Annie and Hilda and her brother John, Clara enjoyed visiting the local market every week with the family's farm produce.

It was through this way of life that Clara met her husband, Tommy Suggitt in the fields of their neighbouring farms.

Clara and Tommy had one son, Frank Suggitt who went on to have four children, Heather, Caroline, Rachael and John.

Now living in Oak Trees Care Home, Alne, Clara has ten great grandchildren.

Clara's grandaugher Rachael Taylor said: "She is very proud of getting to 100. She is still very active playing dominoes, drafts and joining in with any activity that's going on in the home.

"Clara puts her long life down to lots of country air and a positive attitude and a happy disposition."
