AN EAST Yorkshire First World War hero is to be honoured in Merseyside and France.

Rainhill Civic Society researched names on the town’s war memorial, including Royal Flying Corps’ Lt T A Jones. Lt Jones was a navigator with pilot Lt R.I.A.Hickes, from Market Weighton, and their bi-plane was shot down returning from a raid in August 1918.

The pair, both 19, crashed in the French village of Latour-en- Woevre. The Rainhill society has arranged a poppy-laying ceremony with the Mayor of Latour en Woevre on May 24. The mayor said the men “died for France” and are buried in the town’s churchyard.

The Rainhill researchers also tracked down the grandson of the German pilot who shot down the airmen, and want to make sure people in Market Weighton know about the efforts to honour Lt Hickes.

He was born in 1891, the son of vet Robert Jonathon Hickes and Mary Hickes, and lived in the Market Place before the family left for Nottinghamshire. Anyone with more information is asked to email brianrenshall@gmail.com
