WORK will start next week on the construction of a £4 million new doctors' surgery in Pocklington.

York-based Lindum Construction has won the contract to build the replacement for the Pocklington Group Practice’s current cramped premises in Barmby Road.

The new surgery on land at Groves Farm, on the outskirts of the town, is expected to take about a year to complete.

Practice and business manager Berni Judge said it would offer a series of benefits to patients, including significantly improved accessibility and improved reception and waiting areas which will provide more space and comfort.

There will also be additional consulting and treatment rooms, providing space to expand the practice and meet the needs of existing and new patients, and greatly improved car parking.

"It also provides greater opportunities for the delivery of better integrated services with community providers as well as secondary care," she said. “It has taken many years to get to this stage and we are absolutely thrilled to be finally announcing that building work will be commencing very soon.

“We also wish to acknowledge and thank Jonathan Atkinson and his father John Atkinson, of J G Hatcliffe & Partners, who have made it possible for us to buy the land for the new premises from Henry Thirsk. Without their help, we would not be in the very fortunate position that we find ourselves in today in announcing the start of this exciting project.”

Lindum managing director Simon Gregory said it was great news to receive the go-ahead for the new healthcare facility. "We are delighted to be involved in creating a modern, purpose-built medical centre for the Pocklington community," he said.

"We are bringing the knowledge and experience gained from constructing over 40 medical centres over the past 13 years to this project and look forward to working with the rest of the team involved, as we carry out the work which is scheduled to be completed this time next year."

Aspect 4 Limited has been appointed as project managers/cost consultants and P&HS as architects.
