A YORKSHIRE seaside town could hit the silver screen when one of the country's best-loved sitcoms reappears in film-form.

Businesses and locations in Bridlington have played host to location scouts working on the the upcoming Dad's Army film.

The town could stand in for Walmington-in-Sea, with its Georgian Rooms tea rooms, and the Old Town Art Gallery taking the place of a funeral parlour in the production.

Diane Davision, who owns the Georgian Rooms, said location scouts were first in touch around 10 days ago, and have since been to visit the town before making a decision about the film's final location later this week.

And town mayor Shelagh Finlay, who spotted the news about Bridlington's potential starring role in the hotly awaited film, said she was delighted with the possibility.

"The old town in Bridlington is a fabulous place for people to visit, and hopefully if it is all dressed up for the filming it will look even better.

"We are absolutely delighted. Everybody knows one of the phrases from the TV programme, and we all love the series.

The original series was filmed on the south coast in the 1960s and 70s, with Great Yarmouth and Thetfortd both appearing as Walmington-on-Sea.

A film version was made in 1971, and the modern day remake was announced earlier this summer with Bill Nighy taking on John Le Mesurier's part of the laconic Sergeant Wilson, and Toby Jones as Captain Mainwaring.

Bridlington is one of several Yorkshire towns in the running for a starring role in the film, with Pickering, Filey and Whitby both reportedly being checked by location scouts working on the film.

The film will be directed by Oliver Parker, who made Johnny English Reborn, St Trinian's and a film version of Othello starring Sir Kenneth Branagh.

Original screen writer Jimmy Perry will be a producer on the new film, but the script is set to be written by Johnny English Reborn writer Hamish McColl.
