WHOEVER thinks love at first sight is just a myth should reconsider after this couple celebrated their diamond wedding.

Ethel Bainbridge says she knew straight away she would marry Kenneth, her husband of 60 years, when they met on a blind date in the early 1950s. The date had been arranged by Kenneth’s friend during his time in the RAF on national service and the rest is, as they say, history.

They were married in the North Yorkshire village of Tockwith, in 1954, and can now boast two daughters, four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Mrs Bainbridge, who now lives in Huntington, said: “I knew straight away he was who I wanted to marry.

“We’ve just got on with our marriage. We have had some arguments, but we have our family and a lot of good friends nearby.

“My husband has been through a lot with strokes recently, and I’ve had cancer, but we are still here and going strong.”

Most of the couple’s family now live in Scotland, but they are travelling to York this weekend to celebrate the anniversary.
