Two men have been arrested and released on bail after a fire tore through a home in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A 19-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation when the blaze broke out on Scargill Road, Harrogate, at 2.53am in a ground floor bedroom.

Two men aged 33 and 26, both from Harrogate, were arrested in connection with the incident and released on bail late last night to allow for further police enquiries.

Det Sgt Alan Browne, of Harrogate CID, said:: “Thankfully neither of the occupants of the flat were seriously injured as a result of this fire. However, the consequences could have been far worse.

“If you have any information which could help my investigation I urge you to come forward and contact the police straight away.”

All occupants were out of the property when crews arrived, but two people needed hospital treatment.

Firefighters used four breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets, a thermal imaging camera, a main jet and positive pressure ventilation fan.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
