DO YOU remember this dramatic accident in York?
It happened 30 years ago today, when a lorry carrying an excavator hit the footbridge outside St Peter’s School and brought it crashing down.
A woman cyclist escaped being hit by the falling bridge by inches, and a Ford Capri parked nearby also narrowly missed being struck.
The picture was discovered in our library during a recent reorganisation. We have scanned in several hundred more pictures and will be gradually uploading them to our website over the coming weeks.
We have also been publishing a series of galleries of photographs of York in the 1950s and 1960s.
Visit yorkpress.co.uk/history to see the latest additions and to share your memories of York in years gone by.
