YORK’s ancient Assize of Ale tradition will be continued today when the current Sheriff John Kenny, the Guild of Scriveners, and others visit alehouses across the city.
In aid of civic charities York Teaching Hospital and York Against Cancer, as well as St Leonard’s Hospice and York Blind and Partially Sighted Society, the event will see the Sheriff and others don period costume and end the day with a medieval feast at Bedern Hall.
Celebrations begin with a procession from the Guildhall to the steps of the Mansion House for the Sheriff’s Address, and from there participants will take part in the medieval custom by visiting alehouses to ensure the beer is palatable.
As well as the Assize of Ale, the Guildhall will be open to the public from 10am to 12 noon and 2pm to 4pm.
Entry is free and there will be free seal-making workshops. People can also watch preparations for the Assize.
