A SWING bridge is in operation on Pocklington Canal more than 80 years after its predecessor was removed.

The new number eight swing bridge was officially opened on August 1.

The original was fitted for a nearby farmer and also carried a public footpath, but was replaced with a fixed bridge shortly after the canal ceased to be navigable in 1932.

A new steel structure was installed by the Pocklington Canal Amenity Society in the 1990s, but could not be operated as a swing bridge until a new bearing, or pintle, was made with the help of a donation by Pocklington Canal Boat Club last year.

Would have been nice for an actual photo of the bridge, instead of some 'library' picture of the canal.

The navigable section is a lovely short paddle if you have a canoe. always quiet, always lovely.

There's something quite strange about looking at a canal that cannot be used for its purpose... some of the roads between melbourne and Pocklington go over the canal, and the lock gates are closed up whilst the canal itself is chokka with reeds and other plants.
