A COLOURFUL mosaic is being unveiled at a community garden in York.

Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s community growing project Dig In is behind the artwork at Glen Community Garden and is showing it off to the public on Saturday (August 9) from 10am – 12noon with a picnic tea party.

The mosaic, which depicts vegetables grown in the garden, was produced with the expert guidance from mosaic artist Sue Kershaw.

Children from Years 3 and 4 at Heworth CE Primary School designed it and began the careful task of putting it together. The mosaic was then moved to St Aelred’s Community Centre for its completion.

Dig In Project Officer Marie Birbeck said: “Over 50 people helped to make the mosaic; along with Heworth Primary school, groups included: Dig In’s gardening clubs, Community Base and others from Heworth and Tang Hall community. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone; the finished mosaic is wonderful and shall be a lasting memento of everything the communities have achieved at Glen Garden and beyond. ”

The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s Dig In project has been running for almost three years and has created a network of community-led edible food growing places in partnership with City of York Council.
