The photo of the kids playing in the river is wrong. There is a modern motorbike in the background. It more likely to have been taken in the seventies or eighties.

I think the "Bar" on the Knavesmire is a mock-up for a Military tattoo display, I'm sure I've seen it before in a book of Photo's of York.

Thanks for that nugget of information as I was trying to work out which bar/gate had grass in front of it, as I'm sure it would have been built on by now.

Love the old photos shown over the last couple of days.

The Queen's Staith picture does look to have been miscaptioned, as mentioned above, so has been removed from this collection. We'll try to find the correct date for it.

I find these picture articles of old York fascinating. However everytime I look at them I'm struck by how clean, open and uncluttered both the pavements and roads look. I wonder if theres any chance of using these pictures as a template on redesigning our streets.

Hi Kelvar, our features department do run a "Yesterday Once More" article in the paper each Monday. It always includes a selection of pictures and stories from our archives or that have been sent in by readers. The past articles are at www.yorkpress.co.uk/
history

We will try to find ways to publish more of our archive photos as well, as these two 1950s collections seem to have been popular.
