The world's biggest book of remembrance has been an inspiration to a group of young offenders using spray can art to create a memorial to the Fallen.

York Minster has teamed up with young people from York Youth Offending Team to create the modern memorial to the centenary of the outbreak of First World War.

The 16 to 18-year-olds have now started creating the street art-inspired work as part of a ten-week programme to develop their skills and create a huge canvas to go on show in the Minster.

It will be inspired by York Minster’s displays about the Great War including the King's Book of York Heroes.

The hulking volume, one of the world's biggest books, and the bulkiest book of remembrance is unique because it not only includes names and biographies but also individual photographs of the casualties.

Helen Moore, the Minster’s community engagement officer, said : "We hope this will help the young people relate to and reflect on the identities and legacies of the people included.”

Each teenager will spray their own giant canvas with names from the King's Book to create a medal-shaped memorial ready for York Minster Nights in autumn, part of the Illuminating York festival.
