YORK'S new Star Inn the City restaurant at the bottom of Museum Gardens, the Vangarde shopping centre, the new piazza at York Minster and the cathedral's stunning Orb exhibition indoors were all among the winners at a glitzy awards ceremony last night to recognise the best of modern design in York.

The Star Inn the City picked up the Lord Mayor's Award at the York Design Awards. The Minster piazza and the Orb exhibition shared the award for best 'public realm' design, while the Vangarde centre was named best new non-residential scheme.

Other winners announced at the awards ceremony at the Nestlé Product Technology Centre last night included a converted chapel in Southbank Avenue and a restored mid-terraced house in Darnborough Street (which shared best restoration/ re-use); the restored 'King's Manor Achievement' at King's Manor (best conservation); a stylish oak- and glass-fronted home in Upper Poppleton (best new residential) and the extended and refurbished Clifton School Nursery (best mixed scheme).

There were ten winners in all across six categories. Most were chosen by a panel of judges headed by architect Julian Bicknell - panel members visited every scheme in May. But one category was voted for by readers of The Press.

And the winner of the prestigious Press People's Award? The landscaping for the Derwenthorpe development, which includes hedgerows and trees as well as ponds, becks and a grassland meadow.

Head judge Julian Bicknell said there had been a wonderful mix of entries for the 2014 awards.

"The entries ...cover a gratifyingly wide field - from large scale commercial and institutional buildings to the smallest extension and conservation projects," he said. "The standard is very high across the board and there are deserving winners in every category. The best of them represent the ideal: finely-designed buildings, well-suited to their immediate context and taking a worthy place in the rich historic fabric of the City of York."

Janet Hopton, chair of the York Design Awards committee, said she was delighted with the continuing support for the awards, from architects, developers, owners, sponsors, and The Press. "Together we are all working to raise awareness of the importance to York of good design and high standards in conservation," she said.
