Teacher tells of racist abuse in York

York Press: The Malik family who were victims of verbal racial abuse in York. Left to right: Janet Malik-Aziz, Aaisha, Ibrahim, Imaan, & Mikaeel The Malik family who were victims of verbal racial abuse in York. Left to right: Janet Malik-Aziz, Aaisha, Ibrahim, Imaan, & Mikaeel

A TEACHER and mother of four has spoken out after she and her family were racially abused in York.

Janet Malik-Aziz, a teacher from Bradford, was visiting York with her family to watch her son play cricket, when she and her children were verbally abused in the street.

Mrs Malik-Aziz is of English and Pakistani descent and wears a hijaab, or headscarf, and used to live in York. She said she had never experienced anything like the incident, which happened in Clifton last weekend, on Sunday afternoon.

She said: "We were just coming back from the shop. I was in front and the children were behind and I saw these two young men, between 18 and 24, carrying alcohol bottles. They looked at me and didn't say anything but as they passed I heard them say something to the children behind me.

"My 14-year-old Mikaeel was very red and I asked what they had said. He told me they'd said 'go back to your ******* own country'. That's when the youth turned back round and started verbally abusing me, asking if I had a problem, what I was looking at and started walking back towards me."

The youth continued to use bad language towards Mrs Malik-Aziz, and said if her husband had been present "they would knock him out". Mrs Malik-Aziz walked away, but said she was shocked by the incident.

She said: "I'm disappointed in a way. I just never expected to be verbally abused like that on the streets of York. With the Tour de France coming it's quite shocking something like that is happening.

"It was just unprovoked. We were there to enjoy the day. It's quite sad and shocking. You have to forgive; they are just a minority, I know that, and you can't let something like this put you off. It's something I want to show my children - I want them to see the incident is serious and police take it seriously, and are looking at CCTV to see if they can identify the youths. It's important for them to know they do not have to be victims."

PC Catherine Midgely, of York Police, said: "Racist abuse is abhorrent and not something we will tolerate.

"This is a particularly nasty case as the abuse was directed at children who were with their mother. It naturally left the family feeling distressed and upset. If you have any information which could help to identify the men responsible for this incident, I urge you to contact the police straight away."

Shocking even without the Tour de France coming, why that was mentioned I have no idea. But I guess these racial idiots we never be found and educated.

Although racism should not be tolerated, it happens daily in any city or town across the UK and thankfully this rather unpleasant episode is hardly news worthy. Only last week whilst having the unfortunate requirement to walk through Clifton myself, some scrote shouted to my wife "show us your *****". I wasn't compelled to run to the Press and say "This shouldn't be happening on the streets of York and what with the world cup on the box!"

Absolutely horrendous, but this sort of ignorance won't stop until scrotes like these two are educated in tolerance and it's likely they are unemployed and blame their misfortune on anyone they can, just to give them an excuse for being lazy, ignorant, stupid and drunkard.

The reference to UKIP is unfair on the educated, employed and reasonably intelligent voter who sees the bigger picture and not the racism spouted by the uniformed. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, which is part of our society.

Racism is not an opinion, but an abhorrent attitude often taken due to personal failure.

We should all make it clear, racism is NOT acceptable in York.

Yes and all the green party supporters are stoners, all labour party supporters are toffs blah blah blah... I mean the UKIP having a person leading the campaign who isn't white British only supports your stereotypical views!

So if you class all people who support a party all the same how does that fit in with racism? I mean people are called racists for not liking people of a certain race or belief?

And I’d argue that a racist would actually support the BNP rather then be a closet racist... why vote for a party that only wants to close the borders rather then hating everyone who isn't white?

I totally agree. This is one off isolated instance by two young drunk idiots - The Press are attempting to cause mass hysteria and based on some of the comments it’s working a treat!

Running this story won’t resolve anything and serves only to get everyone on their high horses giving it the big un on racism

Ps: Why is it relevant that the woman is a teacher and why is TEACHER is caps? Does this make the offence worse than if she worked as a cleaner for example?
The reason the word teacher is in capitals, is that all the stories have the first word in caps. Click on anything in the "most read" column and prove it.
Very interesting that you are so keen to rubbish this story that you never thought to check that.. I think it says something about you. Why do you not want this story published? I question your motives
There is nothing of the "isolated incident about it" the country is awash with Islamophobic hatred, examples of it are everywhere. A young student was recently stabbed to death. We cannot prejudge the case, but she was wearing religious dress. The incidents of racially motivated murder are overwhelmingly crimes against Asians, and they are on the increase.

Wrong! Her children were racially abused and one of the ignorant's came walking/threatening towards the mother. What people are forgetting or not addressing is that this was aimed at CHILDREN. How scared they must have been. Attacked in the streets, to see their mother verbally attacked and to hear that if their father had been there he would have been knocked out. And these are just what the paper has quoted I'm sure that a lot more was said. I hope those children are ok.

Let me help you in your confusion. You state a racist comment happened. It's occurred actually, but let's not pick up on spelling. You state a "racist comment happened (Occurred) How do you know this? Surely you know this by the lady who reported this and experienced her children verbally and racially abused. OK, so let's explore deeper. The same lady who informed you of the racial abuse, also informed us (not you) of the walking back towards her and threatening her. So she was correct in sharing her experiences of the first point, but she's incorrect (to you only) of the 2nd point.

Hmmmmm you need to revisit your thinking on this one. Possibly with a less angered sense before you type.

P.S. Great to be back =)

This IS an isolated incident in YORK - Why bring the whole countries problems into the argument other than to add to the hysteria and bolster your own inner anger… This is the York Press reporting on stories in and around York… you’ll be bringing the racist atrocities in South Africa into the story soon as if somehow related…

But if you want to play the numbers game more seriously, the top age the woman assumed was their age was 24. So that makes "it" excuse the term it, but that's all it is, was born in 1990. That by your theory makes them at the political influential age of 4 in 1994 with a further 3 years to 1997 to mould and shape the child's selfish views deeper.

I also feel a child's political views don't develop until mid to late teens but Micklegate was desperate to frame these racist aggressors as Blairites

The Government has created this situation with its view on Immigration. The situation is also made worse with how some people portray the mini wars waged in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and the nuclear argument with Iran. The murder of the soldier Lee Rigby only fuelled the fire.

The un-educated man sees all Muslims as anti West and I'm afraid I cannot see the situation getting any better. Maybe the Government should stand up and be counted and as long as circumstances remain there will always be the minority who use this as a mechanism to contribute towards racism through their shallow minds.

Very interesting that you notice that case, but have evidently not noticed the international conspiracy of child abuse involving thousands of abused children (tens of thousands in the US alone) many thousand more in the UK and Ireland. And the perpetrators were protected for decades and allowed to continue the abuse.
Of course criticising the predominantly white Catholic church would not suit your agenda would it?

All hate crime is abhorrent, I just wish the media and the police would think this way too.

It didn't happen overnight and was not one simple thing - it has many roots. The welfare system in the UK has been badly abused. Indigenous white have three approaching four generations of families who haven't worked and now simply don't want to ever. We are breeding selfish people who take and don't contribute. We are a very small country with not unlimited space and many have come here to work (and show others up who don't) but the tax they are paying won't pay pensions and child benefit or assist the plight of the NHS. For those who have made comments regarding if this should have been news worthy I say it most certainly is. This was not just two drunken youths on a rant. They were not drunk, they were aggressive and intimidating. My children were terrified as was I for their safety.
Racist and religious abuse is a CRIME and as such should be taken seriously.
Later on that evening one of my children asked me what did the man mean when he said go back to your own country. This is my children's country, they were born here, their mother and father were born here, their Pakistani Grandfather fought in WW2 for the British, they are British and they have the basic human right to walk down a street without fear of being attacked for the colour of their skin or for their religious believe, as does every other human being!
Peace and blessings to you all!

I would like to thank all the people for your kind comments of support regarding what happened to me and my children in York.
This is my children's country, they were born here, their mother and father were born here, their Pakistani Grandfather fought in WW2 for the British, they are British and they have the basic human right to walk down a street without fear of being attacked for the colour of their skin or for their religious believe, as does every other human being!

unhappy as I am to read of your misfortune I reiterate look at the scale of it. The abuse of children by celebrities of which we are all becoming aware - the abuse of children by men of religion - be it indoctrination or mental and sexual abuse is well documented but there is so much more uncovered which will have affected deeply the lives of so many who thought they were safe - who knows how many have ended their lives because of this. The continued trafficking of humans and their subsequent abuse is phenomenal and whilst I applaud the support you have been given by many, in the greater scheme this is not news worthy other than to incite those who are not aware or choose to ignore the greater picture. I'm deeply saddened and sorry.

Roughly summed up as "Bu...bu...bu..
.but they are are stealing our jobs!"

You can't put a lipstick on your pig party - you are simply a racist...

Voting for them has finally given a socially acceptable sheen to this and despite your protests, you are part of the problem...
I think it's you who has the problem, why bring UKIP into this, this is about two cowardly alcohol swigging scrotes, who think they can do and say what they like.

Sweetheart until I read your comment I didn't even think of it but I too have a son who has ginger hair and has had this hurled at him on an almost daily basis and he handles it the same way your son does. Abuse has many forms.

With the outpouring of UKIP support on here this story is hardly surprising. Sad, but hardly surprising...
Funny how the Labour camp jump straight in with idiotic comments like this!
I suspect more and more stories like this in the York press over the next year before the local and general elections, no doubt, the labour party activists will wade in with 'it was them UKIP fascists/racists.!"

When at the end of the day these 2 youths are probably from the local council estate and from a family that actually votes Labour! Product of a broken Britain, broken by Labour! Labour are the true idiots in this city and country, just take a look at the morons on the Labour cabinet!

So apologies from all the decent residents of York go out to Janet and her children , please don't let this put you off coming to York, I and many other residents would be happy to make you most welcome.

A UKIP voter (ex labour, sick of their lies and not a racist bone in my body)

Dear press,

Why do you continue to remove my comments? They are not offensive? You have not e-mailed me to say they are in breach of the site rules?

So please can you at least inform me before removing my comments from this site? Or explain to me why they have been removed?

It is no coincidence that the two articles this has happened on are the one where hoof hearted appears?

This site is already bad enough with all the vote rigging never mind you lot removing comments that are not in breach of rules.

I just wish you had more important things to do.... I also wish you would stop getting my comments removed every time they prove how idiotic and childish you are. So did you ever figure out when i suggested you were this crisp character? no that is paranoia.

Being a sore looser is a very bad trait.
