Moo-ving love story leads to marriage

Romance blossomed at the Great Yorkshire Show between livestock buyer Katrina Donaldson and Steven O’Kane - though at first Katrina only had eyes for her husband-to-be’s prize heifer.

Steven had come over from Ireland to show his British Blue called Gorgeous. It was love at first sight for Katrina, from Huby - at least as far as Gorgeous was concerned.

Steve, 31, from Derry, said: “She approached me about buying Gorgeous and I said: ‘Only if I get a date.’ “She looked at me a bit strange. I think she only agreed to get my heifer.”

Farmer’s daughter Katrina, a livestock buyer for Morrison’s, wrote a cheque for the five-figure sum, said Steve, adding: “She took the heifer home on Thursday and a fortnight later I decided to go and see Gorgeous. I went to Huby to see the both of them - and never went home.”

After a whirlwind romance, Steve popped the question and 24-year-old Katrina said ‘yes’.

Everyone was invited to watch them tie the knot at All Hallows’ Church, Sutton-on-the-Forest, including Gorgeous, although the vicar drew the line at a cow in the graveyard because of concerns about damage.

But Gorgeous was guest of honour at the reception, following which the happy couple departed for a dream honeymoon in the US.

Katrina told The Press: “I always was interested in Steve. But it did start when I wanted to buy his heifer.”

No one is saying how much the cow that got the farmer a wife changed hands for, but Steve reckons he got a bargain - in more ways than one.

“I got the money for Gorgeous - but I never gave Katrina a refund when I got her and my heifer back,” he confided.

Katrina went to school in Easingwold and went to Bishop Burton Agricultural College. The couple plan to start a family - but want to see Gorgeous produce a herd first.
