A CARAVANER has hit out at City of York Council after she claims a booking she made in January for the Tour de France weekend has now been cancelled.

Carole Love, 53, from Ayrshire in Scotland, says she and her cycling enthusiast husband, Bob, 46 booked a pitch for a motor home, at Millennium Bridge for July 5 and 6 at a cost of £62 at the start of the year and was called with less than a month to go to be told it had to be cancelled.

City of York Council has said that management changes at the site mean they have had to cancel some bookings.

Mrs Love said: "The guy on the phone could give me no explanation why my booking was being cancelled so late in the day and told me he had had to phone more than 50 other people who were in a similar situation to me.

"We have visited the city twice before and loved both trips, but this has left me very angry."

Sally Burns, director of communities and neighbourhoods at the council, said: “As we said on the Experience the Race website, we would confirm arrangements with people booking nearer the time and might need to offer alternatives if sites became unavailable, which is what we are doing.

"Due to changes to the management of these sites, we are sorry that we are now unable to accommodate caravan bookings and are working hard with our customers to do everything we can to help them find suitable alternatives for these clients and ensure that their visit to York is as enjoyable as possible.

"We’re sorry this customer wasn’t happy with our service as we aim for the highest standards and we hope to speak with her and resolve her concerns. We are able to continue to take tent bookings at the Millennium Bridge bookings as this requires a different sort of site management.”

Mrs Love said she now has a pitch at Rowntree Park for £67.60.
