FIFTY litres of paint will be used to recreate a giant piece of land art to help celebrate the world’s most famous cycle race.

The community paint project aims to provide a colourful start to the second stage of this year’s Tour de France in York which will be on display in front of the spectator stands when hundreds of riders set off on the second leg of Le Tour in York on Sunday, July 6.

York Art Workshops have teamed up with Crown Decorating Centres which have donated 50 litres of paint for The Road Through York project in which an image, influenced by David Hockney’s The Road To York Through Sledmere, has been created by artist and tutor Karen Winship – depicting city landmarks – and will be recreated as a huge piece of land art.

Amateur artists are taking part under the guidance of Ms Winship and Claire Douglas, visual art curriculum manager for York Learning, using 320 metre square boards which have been painted, thanks to products provided by the Crown Decorating Centre at Clifton Moor.

Peter Carr, manager at the Clifton store, said: “As a team we’re delighted to be a part of this project. It’s a huge event for Britain to be a part of.”
