TWO inspirational young men who dedicate their free time to helping others have been recognised for their efforts and nominated for a Community Pride award.

DJ and DJ company owner Tyrone Oliver and Network Rail works planner Alex Wise have both been put forward by proud friends and family.

Tyrone, 44, has been nominated for the Sporting Hero award, which is sponsored by York Racecourse, by his partner Leanne Lazenby, who said:

"I think Tyrone deserves to be recognised for all his hard work.

“He runs a very busy business but still finds time five days a week to help the boys play in their local teams.”

Tyrone helps coach his youngest son Kian's rugby team at Heworth ARLFC, completing courses in level one and two coaching. And he recently started coaching the Osbaldwick under 15s cricket club, where his youngest son Alfie plays.

Tyrone said: “I feel really proud and honoured to be nominated for this award. I love to see kids involved in sport.”

“It provides them with opportunities, keeps them off the streets and makes them become part of the community.”

Tyrone is now involved in plans for a rugby project at Archbishop Holgate's CE School.

Meanwhile Alex Wise, 24, has been nominated as Volunteer of the Year, sponsored by Aviva, by his friend and fellow voluntary worker James Savage.

Alex balances his full-time job with leading the 2nd Acomb Cub Scout group and runs football sessions in summer for young people.

Recently Alex, who was nominated for Community Pride's Charity Fundraiser of the Year award last year, carried the flag and lead the Scouts' and Guides' St George's Day parade through York after being awarded the Meritorious Conduct Award. Alex was on holiday in Blackpool when he spotted a bicycle with a child's buggy attached get stuck under a tram, and heroically comforted the pair until paramedics arrived.

The 24-year-old has also built a miniature railway and takes it round the country raising money for Diabetes UK - a charity close to his heart after he was diagnosed with type one diabetes. He has raised £1,223.97 in the past year.

Alex said: “Helping others has got me through it all. I have been determined to get on and give everyone the best I can offer."

The Community Pride awards are run by The Press and City of York Council and sponsored by Benenden Health.
