The history of a village was spelled out to passing commuters when it was unfurled by pupils at their local train station.

Passengers travelling between York and Harrogate were treated to the first glimpse of the children's work at Hammerton Station.

The banner tells the story of Hammerton through the ages and was put together by classmates from Kirk Hammerton CE Primary.

The school teamed up with Northern Rail and Rural Arts for the project to chart the history of the village from the Celts and Romans.

Station Manager Dave Norton said: “We have had some lovely feedback from our customers who feel it’s the perfect welcome to Hammerton and a great, eye catching piece of work for anyone travelling past on our trains.”

Assistant Head Joe Cooper added: “We are very proud of our links to the community and are grateful to Northern Rail for allowing us to brighten up the station. We hope that other schools do the same at their local station!”
