A woman driver was airlifted to hospital and a major North Yorkshire road blocked for this morning's rush hour after a car and a lorry collided.

The silver Suzuki Liana driven by the woman was trapped between the HGV and white Daf articulated lorry following the accident at 6.40am on the A19 at Baldersby, near Thirsk.

The collision on the north side of the road blocked the road and traffic was diverted off the stretch between Baldersby and the Busby Stoop junction with the A167.

Fire crews from Ripon and Boroughbridge rescued the woman who was flown to James Cook Hospital, Middlesbrough. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.  The road is now open.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash to contact the North Yorkshire Police force control room on 101.
