A RECORD 900 cyclists descended on Selby yesterday for the annual Great Selby Bike Ride.

The event, organised by the town's Lion's clubs, is on course to raise more than £7,000 for good causes.

The riders set off from Barlby High School yesterday morning and chose between a 25 mile or a 45 mile route, with the starting gun was pulled by Radio York's Elly Fiorentini.

Selby Lions' Dave Jones said: "It went very well, we had record numbers and the weather was much better than expected."

Cyclists as young as eight and as old as 80 were among the crowds, he added, and 64 marshals from Selby Lions lined the route.

Selby Osteopaths were on hand offering massages for sore legs, and caterers from Barlby High School provided refreshments.

The money raised will go the the British Heart Foundation, Martin House Children's Hospice, St Leonard's Hospice, the Sheffield Institute for Motor Neurone Disease, and the Selby Lions Local Charities Fund.
