A WOMAN was rescued from a burning house in Selby, in an incident police believe may have been started deliberately.

Police were called by the fire service to the property in Newcroft, Selby, at 1.26am today.

The sole occupant of the house, a woman in her fifties, was rescued from the property and taken to York District Hospital for treatment following smoke inhalation.

A police spokeswoman said officers believe the fire had been started deliberately, and urged anyone with information to contact them.

She said: "Police and fire investigators are carrying out an investigation into the cause of the fire.

"Anyone who saw or heard and suspicious activity in the area late on Sunday night or in the early hours of Monday morning, is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2 and ask for Selby police."

A spokesman for the fire service said the house sustained fire damage and heavy smoke damage.

Fire investigation officers were also sent to the scene, and investigations are expected to continue today, with a police presence still at the scene.
