HUNDREDS of York pensioners will enjoy some Christmas joy during the next festive season, thanks to money raised at last December's Community Carol Concert.

Concert chairman John Warburton handed a cheque for £2,000 to the current Lord Mayor, Cllr Julie Gunnell, in a ceremony at the Mansion House.

The annual Lord Mayor's Christmas Cheer function at the Assembly Rooms in Blake Street gives hundreds of pensioners the chance to enjoy an early Christmas dinner with the Lord Mayor.

Cllr Gunnell said: "It's really well attended and really enjoyed by people, and this donation is a huge contribution towards the costs of staging the event."

The sell-out community carol concert took place at the Barbican in December, and featured acts including York soprano Rebecca Newman, the Shepherd Group Concert Brass Band, the York community choir Millegro, the harp group Clouds and the choirs of Headlands Primary School and Yearsley Grove Primary School.

It raised a total of £6,000, with £2,000 cheques having already gone to the City of York Afghanistan Commemorative Appeal and to York Hospital Radio as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.

This year’s concert will take place at the Barbican on Sunday, December 14, with tickets available from the centre’s box office from July 1.
