Star York pupil Mabel Carrington will be in the spotlight playing young Fiona in Shrek The Musical when it starts its first national tour at the Leeds Grand Theatre on July 23.

A member of the Stagecoach Theatre School , the nine-year-old beat off competition from 50 other hopefuls in the final audition for the role which includes a singing solo.

It is Mabel’s first professional engagement having started training with Stagecoach last September.

Four girls who will play young Fiona at Leeds from Wednesday July 23 to Sunday August 17. The other three hail from West Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

The production comes direct from the West End where it was seen by nearly a million people.

Stagecoach York Principal Sally Thrussell said: “We are delighted for Mabel who thoroughly deserves the role. I am sure it will be the first of many shows she’s in.”
