THE man who ran a quiz league for York's working men's clubs for many years has received recognition for his efforts.
Retired quizmaster Ken Needham was presented with a number of items when the Tramways club in Mill Street, off Piccadilly, hosted the annual union knockout final and presentation evening.
The gifts included a framed copy of a Guinness Book of Records acknowledgement that the York CIU Quiz League was the oldest in Britain, having been formed in 1946, a limited edition print of a painting of Mallard and six bottles of his favourite red wine. A bouquet was also presented to his wife Sharyn.
A spokesman said the league currently had two divisions of eight teams in each division, with 86 people having taken part in the 2013/14 season, not including the quizmaster and questionmasters who gave their time up every week to officiate at each of the matches.
He said the clubs in the league were Acomb, Burton Lane, Clarence, Fulfordgate, Haxby, Holgate, Huntington, Pocklington, Severus, South Bank, Tramways and York Railway Institute.
