A TEENAGE motorist has died following a crash with a lorry in North Yorkshire.

The 19-year-old man, from the Leeds area, was involved in a head-on collision with an HGV driven by a Bulgarian man near the Selby Fork Hotel, near Sherburn in Elmet, yesterday afternoon.

North Yorkshire Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

A spokeswoman said the collision happened at 2.47pm on the A1246 between Fairburn and the junction with the A63.

"A white, Bulgarian registered HGV being driven by a 56-year-old man from Bulgaria, was travelling towards Fairburn when it was in collision with a black Renault Clio travelling in the opposite direction," she said.

"Sadly the driver and sole occupant of the Clio, a 19-year-old man from the Leeds area, died form his injuries. The driver of the HGV was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

"The road was closed while collision investigators examined the scene and to allow for recovery of the vehicles. It re-opened at around 11.20pm."

She said officers particularly wanted to speak to the driver of a pale coloured or white car which was seen in the area at the time of the collision.

"Officers would like to speak to the occupant as they may be a vital witness who could have information which could assist the investigation," she said.

"Officers would also like to hear from anyone else who was travelling along the same stretch of road in either direction and saw either vehicle prior to the crash, or who witnessed the actual collision."

Anyone with information should call 101 or email MCIT@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk.
